What causes syphilis?
Syphilis is caused by the bacterium treponema pallidum. Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection and can cause serious health problems if left untreated.
Syphilis can be spread through contact with an infected person's sores, during vaginal, anal, or oral sex. It can also be spread from mother to child during pregnancy or childbirth.
It is usually painless and can appear on the genitals, rectum, mouth, or other parts of the body.
Treponema pallidum is a spiral-shaped bacterium that can only survive in warm, moist areas of the body.
Stages of syphilis:
Syphilis has four stages listed bellow
The Primary syphilis is characterized by the appearance of a single, painless sore, called a chancre, at the site of infection.
The chancre usually appears within 3 weeks of exposure to the bacteria.
The secondary syphilis occurs 4–12 weeks after the chancre appears. It is characterized by a rash that can appear on the skin, mucous membranes, and other parts of the body.
The rash may be flat or raised, and it may be red, brown, or pink.
Other symptoms of secondary syphilis may include fever, swollen lymph nodes, sore throat, hair loss, and fatigue.
The Latent syphilis occurs after the secondary stage has resolved.
The person with syphilis is still infected, but they do not have any symptoms. Latent syphilis can last for years.
Tertiary syphilis is the most serious stage of syphilis.
It can occur 10–30 years after the initial infection. Symptoms of tertiary syphilis can include heart disease, neurological problems, brain damage, blindness and problems to other organs.
